Viva Las Vegas

Las Vegas is almost synonymous with casinos. But look past the Strip, and you’ll find there’s a whole lot more to the city. If you aren’t into gambling, or just need a break from all the bright lights and whirring slot machines, here are three must-visit spots in and around Vegas.

1. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

The majestic sandstone peaks of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lie in Nevada’s Mojave Desert. You’ll find incredible hiking and rock climbing here. Or, stay in the comfort of your car and follow the Scenic Drive, which will take you past some incredible features of the park.
Red Rock Canyon covers more than 195,000 acres and is located 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

2. National Atomic Testing Museum

America’s history with nuclear weapons is fascinating, and you can learn all about it at the National Atomic Testing Museum. The museum is home to both the Silo Museum, which plays a short film about the Nevada Test Site, and the multi-sensory Ground Zero Theater, which explains the history of atomic testing.
You’ll also find exhibits here that showcase authentic Geiger counters, radio badges, and other testing devices.

3. Flamingo Habitat

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas at this serene oasis, located on the grounds of the Flamingo Hotel. This is a peaceful place to chill out while watching flamingos, koi fish, turtles, brown pelicans and other exotic creatures. The habitat is also home to hummingbirds, which you can watch close up at their feeders.
This four-acre garden features waterfalls and streams for a serene, natural atmosphere. It’s completely free to visit!
