  • We checked off a couple more attractions from the book “Top Unusual Things to See in Ontario”. We keep this book in our car in case there is an attraction near where we are going on a road trip. (we often plan day trips around items in this book).  . On this road trip, we checked out:  . The Laithwaite Apple Park Statues is located near Goderich, Ontario. This is a fascinating collection of folk art sculptures created by George Laithwaite. These statues are made from cement, metal, fieldstone, and found materials, showcasing Laithwaite’s creativity and unique artistic vision.  The CNR School on Wheels Railcar Museum. This is a unique little museum located in Clinton, ON. The railcar was part of a program designed to bring education to children in remote areas of Northern Ontario. Fred Sloman, the teacher, and his wife, Cela, lived on the railcar with their five children, travelling through the northern bush to teach.  .  #unsualAttractions #roguetrippers #OntarioDayTrips
  • Today is World Tourism Day  🗺 The theme for this year is Tourism and Peace.  🌏 Tourism is a great way to bring people together and open minds to different lands, cultures, and experiences.  Travel makes the world seem a little smaller, broadens horizons, and builds bridges across the globe.  🌎 Eartha is the world’s largest rotating and revolving globe, located in Yarmouth, Maine.   • "I'm a lumberjack...and I'm okay..." 🪓 Today is National LumberJack Day, a day to celebrate the rugged & hardworking spirit of lumberjacks everywhere. Whether you are choosing wood, climbing trees, or just like rocking the flannel, this day is all about embracing the history of lumberjacking. 🪵 The Tupper Lake Woodsmen statue - or 'Lumberjack Memorial' was erected to honour the rich logging industry history of Tupper Lake, NY. The sculpture depicts a lumberjack holding an axe & a crosscut saw. It stands as a memorial to past, present, and future woodsmen. 🪚 #nationallumberjackday #adirondackmountains #Roguetrippers
  • On this day, we celebrate the 128th birthday of the legendary writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald, the literary genius behind “The Great Gatsby” (and other works) was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on September 24, 1896! In Rice Park St Paul, MN, this bronze statue of Fitzgerald honouring the author stands tall against the backdrop of the Landmark Center building. The Landmark Center, built in 1902, is a stunning example of Romanesque architecture.   • After enjoying dinner al fresco at the Taco Zone, we stopped along the Welland Canal to take in the beauty of the recreational canal waterfront. . It has been many years since I have taken the time to appreciate this area of Welland. This is such a lovely spot. You can walk along the Welland Canal recreational trails, enjoy the beauty of Merritt Island, and learn about the history of the Welland Canal, lift bridge, and the city. . The city was very quiet when we were there, and it was so tranquil. 🌉 The Main Street lift bridge gets lit up at night, creating a nice reflection on the water. 📍 #wellandontario #Ontariodaytrips #roguetrippersdotcom
  • Another of Ontario's tiny jails.  📍 The Port Dalhousie Jail was built in 1845. It is located in Port Dalhousie (St Catharines), Ontario, close to the banks of the original Welland Canal.   . The jail measures 20 feet by 15 feet, 2 inches and had two cells - making it *one of* the smallest jails in Ontario & North America.  . It was primarily used for the temporary lock-up of sailors who were arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct.  . Each cell had their own fireplace, and the inmates were tasked with keeping their fires going.  🔥  It was designated a heritage building by the St. Catharines City Council in 1979.   📍 It can be found at 1 Lakeport Road, St. Catherines, near Lakeside Park and the Carousel.  🎠 #PortDalhousie #stcatharines #OntarioDaytrips #Roguetrippers
